This is the second article in a series to help you decide which Kindle e-reader is right for you. In the first part, we discussed the current model Kindles. This article will cover the discontinued models. If you’re looking to pick up a Kindle at a bargain, a used or discontinued Kindle is a great option. Some of them have the same features as the current Kindles, while some have features that you might find useful that current model Kindles no longer have. Of course, they might not be as flashy as the current models, but once you’re lost in a good book, I doubt you’ll notice the difference.

The Kindles will be divided into three general categories (with categories overlapping some).

Prices are approximate and vary based on the condition of the Kindle, the storage capacity, 3G capabilities, and whether the Kindle includes ads or not.

Discontinued Kindles with Built-in Lights

The first Kindle with a built-in light was the first-generation Paperwhite released in 2012. Before that, people who wanted to read in the dark used clip-on book lights or cases that came with built-in lights. The built-in light must have been a popular feature, because now all their current models include built-in lights. In this section, you’ll find the past models with built-in lights.

Unfortunately, Amazon was slow in catching on that audio was an important feature for many people, so the only ones in this list that have audio are the Oasis 8th and 9th generations.

Also, you’ll see some Kindles in this article with what Amazon calls “active content.” This is a discontinued feature that let users play simple games on their Kindles. Amazon must have decided that when people were buying a Kindle e-reader, they wanted a dedicated e-reader– not another device filled with distractions. Still, a lot of people enjoyed the option of honing their chess or checker skills or seeing how much money they could make with “Lemonade Stand.”

Unlike the newer models, some of the older models had audio jacks and built in speakers. It will be noted if the audio feature is via Bluetooth or an audio jack.

Discontinued Kindle Models Without Touch Screens

Kindle Keyboard ($30-$80)

Though these are among the oldest style Kindles, these Kindles have a very loyal fan base. We find a lot of customers who are very attached to their Kindle Keyboards and will go to great lengths to have theirs repaired or get a new one in working order. In the early days of our business (which wasn’t that long ago), the demand for these Kindles contributed greatly to getting our business off the ground.

Kindle 1st Generation

This is the first Kindle Amazon ever made. It’s definitely one-of-a-kind with a scroll wheel book selector and a weird boxy design. It is the only Kindle to offer a SD memory card slot, which is a good thing since it comes with only 256 MB of storage.

The Odd One Out

After we categorized all the Kindles, we realized we were left with one that didn’t fit into any of the categories above. The Kindle 7th has neither a built-in light, audio, or physical buttons, so it gets a category all on its own. For just a simple reading experience, it’s probably as good as the others.
